You've been here before, the cliche saying of, "Lift with your knees never your back" gets old. BUT ITS TRUE! People time and time again do not apply this simple practice and without fail they injure themselves. But-the biggest culprit isn't that they lifted a couch by themselves, or they tried to move the refrigerator, it's more common that they bent down to pick up something they've done a million times (like a baby), and this "one time" they really "messed up my back".
Unfortunately-in these scenarios time is always against you. Because chances are, you've really been picking EVERYTHING up the wrong way, and you've been putting your weak back muscles on overdrive, and have been lucking out with no injuries. If you always pick things up how you're supposed to, and you don't try to lift more than you can obviously handle (like a pallet of river rocks) you will be fine; and your back will thank you.
